What this area aims to do...
Making you boat go where you want, when you want, isn't really so hard once you've grasped the basics of how a boat works, but there is also a huge history of methods, techniques and philosophies that can make it easier or more flexible.
Obviously you can make a sailing boat go in the same direction as the wind, but in most sailing boats, you can also go the other way, towards the wind, if not straight into it. You can make a sailing boat go sideways if you have a tidal stream to help, and you can sail in reverse if you wish. These are not just "it's possible" things. Many are things we do by choice because they make life easier. Some are things that can get you out of a tight spot.
